Staycation at Movenpick Hotel Bur Dubai

Outfit of the day, lulz: PJs by Blood Orange
So if somehow you missed it (I don't know how that could happen since I tried my best to make sure we all collectively dreamed about it) I had a two day staycation at Movenpick Bur Dubai and it.was.awesome.

After spending two days at the hotel I realized an important thing. Self-care is just something we don't want to accept as a necessary part of life. You can only have a great career if you're working extra hours on an IV of Red Bull. You can only be a good mom if you're overworked and exhausted. You can only have a legit life if you're busier than the next person. Being well-rested and focusing on yourself is considered a 'luxury' and if you claim this luxury for yourself, you're doing it wrong. Unambitious. Bad mom. Purposeless.

After years of putting other things before myself, I made a serious decision some time ago to always focus on myself first. My quality of life has dramatically changed over the last few years because of this and I don't let anyone give me shit over caring for myself. Which is also why I spend most of my money on travel and experiences and not material things because that's the best way for me to reward myself.

And after this short staycation I truly realized how much a tiny recharge can do for you, when you can't manage a prolonged vacation or timeout for whatever reason.

I'm sharing some snippets and a timeline of our stay at the Movenpick Bur Dubai. Next week I'll share some tips with you guys, along with a rough costing (for Dubai), for those interested in doing the same for themselves.

DAY 1: FRIDAY

2:00 pm. N and I left for the hotel after Friday prayers and after a 25 minute drive, we were at the Movenpick in Bur Dubai.

2:30 pm. We quickly checked in and got to our room which was just beyond our expectations. The hotel management had generously given us their executive room and I was seriously so grateful for this extra bit of indulgence. We wanted to hang out right there but their Friday brunch was happening (read my previous review here) so we went down to the restaurant to eat (obviously).

2:30 - 3:30 pm. Had a long, relaxed brunch at Fountain Restaurant at the hotel. I loved their sushi from last time so I had a load of that. The dessert menu had new items this time and I was thrilled to find two of my faves: sticky mango rice and stick date pudding. Stuffed myself. Then came back to the room, took a few quick pictures of the bed before destroying it and got down to business.

3:30 - 6:00 pm. We were so stuffed, all we could do was just crash in bed with little to zero movement. After a bit both of us wanted chai and I generously took one for the team and moved out of my food coma to make it for us. Hung out in bed, had my self-sacrificing chai, read my favorite blogs (I have no idea what N was reading), checked Instagram/Snapchat and had the best time.

6:00 - 9:00 pm. Because N has trouble breathing if he doesn't go to the cinema at least once a week, he booked us in for The Magnificent Seven at the nearby mall and so we drove there, got some cola and watched the movie. It was good fun. Came back and were shocked to discover we were hungry again.

9:00 - 10:00 pm. N ordered room service (which is nearly half the point of staying at a hotel for me, room service is KING) while I did my nails. We decided we wanted to watch another movie so N set up Netflix on TV and we picked Ocean's Eleven which I hadn't seen.

10:00 - 12:00 am. Had the most amazing club sandwich (I'm a club sandwich lover) while N had a beef burger. It was so kickass having such comfort food on the couch with an easy watch. We decided Day 1 was a success and went to sleep.

DAY 2: SATURDAY

9:00 am. I woke up before N, made myself some tea and quietly read in bed.

10:00 am. N woke up and ordered me (shameful) to call in for room service breakfast. The staycation was putting me in a zen mood so I tolerated this fascist attitude and called in for an American breakfast.

10:30 - 11:30 am. Had a glorious, big breakfast of pancakes (for me) and eggs (for N). It was such a big spread, I'm glad we only ordered one. Had more chai and decided we were ready to begin doing nothing all over again.

11:30 - 2:30 pm. One of my life dreams is to hang out in a hotel robe all day and so I began preparations to pursue this dream. Got a face mask on, took a relaxed shower, jumped into my robe and then consequently into bed with my book and music. I'd made a tiny playlist before coming and so I put that on -  the sound system in the room was fabulous, and it all felt realz goodz.

2:30 - 5:30 pm. N wanted to work on a personal project of his so he decided to go to the Executive Lounge with his laptop. I wanted to dress up for no reason so I stayed back in the room, did my hair, put on makeup, changed into socially acceptable clothes and joined N in the Executive Lounge. They had a ton of snacks out so I loaded my plate, crashed on a couch and spent the most pointless, enjoyable time on my phone. Chatted with friends, read silly articles, again had the best time.

5:30 - 6:00 pm. I wanted to check out the hotel so N and I went for a walk around the property. Randomly checked out the gym, pool, salon, all the restaurants.

6:00 - 7:30 pm. Came back to the room. Bee-lined for the tub/Jacuzzi because one of my missions in life on this trip was to have a killer bath. I'd brought my own bath products, had the most luxurious time (you should really try it out if you haven't already, the bath salts relax your muscles like a sixteen-hand massage). Came back and hung out like a zombie next to N until he was ready for dinner.

7:30 - 9:00 pm. We decided to try out one of the restaurants at the hotel and decided on the Indian one called Chutney. Had a slow, happy dinner with bhindi, qorma, garlic naan (all very good), talked a lot.

9:00 - 12:00 am. Came back to the room with plans to watch Oceans Twelve. Ordered in Movenpick ice-cream desserts and had them in bed with George Clooney. Called it a night.

DAY 3: SUNDAY

8:00 am. Woke up the next morning, quickly packed, said goodbye to the room and headed down to Fountain Restaurant for our last breakfast. Had a mix of lots of things, felt accomplished in life. Checked out and headed home :)

Hope you guys enjoyed our tiny trip.

  1. So so so loved this post! And so agree wrt you on the self care bit! Everytime I leave my kid to do something for myself, someone or the other will comment that they would not be able to leave their kid at all!! This shaming culture is horrible!! And yes I loved your snaps!!

Loved reading your stsy-cation story. Most of all, love the way you pyr put things into perspective with positive vibes. I m getting married in February and would move to Dubai. My fiance and I decided to have a stay-cation styled honeymoon in Dubai instead of planning an excursion in another country. It would help us settle kn our new house, while blowing our resources. You just endorsed my plans :)💕

    1. Such a sweet message. Totally with you. You'll easily find spots in Dubai to do it, and even hotels in nearby emirates so it'll feel just like a proper honeymoon. Lots of luck with the upcoming wedding, so close!
